The new social networking site, Pinterest.com, has quickly become an extremely valuable tool for businesses looking to expand their marketing efforts. Pinterest allows its members to “pin” collages of pictures and videos to an online bulletin board. These pictures include uploaded photos, website images and videos. Members can share their board with other Pinterest members. Hyperlinks to posted pictures are what make this new social media site such a powerful marketing tool for businesses.

In a recent report from Comscore, Pinterest gained 10 million monthly visitors quicker than any other social media site. Over 80% of Pinterest members are women. In fact, The Wall Street Journal stated Pinterest’s popularity surge is driven by a large percentage of women who reside in the Midwest and Central U.S. On the official Pinterest bulletin board, it’s posted that 55% of these women are between the ages of 25-44, 30% are 25-34 and 25% are 35-44. In total, over 1.4 visitors post pics daily!

What makes Pinterest so unique? Membership is by invitation only. First things first: get yourself invited. You can request an invite from the social media site or get invited by a Pinterest member. You can locate active Pinterest members for invitations by checking with a member on one of your other social networking sites. Chances are you’ll find someone who’s a member.

Once accepted, create a bulletin board by posting pictures and/or videos that can be cross-referenced with the topics provided. Since most members post recipes, wedding ideas and photos, DIY projects, among others, try to match your board to reflect these tastes. You can do so by posting pictures of customers using your products and services. Other ways include adding product pictures from your website and photos of your business brochures and posters.

Here are more ways to market a business on Pinterest:

  • Use your business name as your user and profile name. Make sure to add information about your business in your Pinterest profile along with your website URL. Connect your account to your Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn accounts.
  • Regularly post on your board with creative board names. However, try to pick pictures from several websites instead of a few. Pin blog posts and videos to set your board apart from others. Include an SEO description underneath each pin.
  • Become friends Interact with other Pinterest members by commenting, liking, tagging, or repin another pin.
  • Add a Follow Me on Pinterest button on your website and/or blog. Use your own Pinterest board RSS feed to advertise.

Be as creative as possible! Videos can include how-to videos on how to use your product and services. Create a dedicated testimonial board, highlight client stories or post coupons to your business.

I really couldn’t understand why only female users (almost 90% of the users are women) are using this wonderful platform.. I believe that this one has got huge potential and probably will be emerged as the best bookmarking tool in the future..
